Cotton is a very versatile fiber which is commonly used in cheap curtains, bed sheets, soft furnishings and clothing as well as many other fabric uses. Cotton grows naturally in tropical and sub-tropical environments and is currently the most common natural fiber that is used in clothing. Here, we’ll take a closer look at the different uses of cotton.
A natural resource
Cotton is a natural material which grows in a kind of protective layer around the seeds of cotton plants. Its botanical purpose is to help with spreading the seeds. It has been used to make fabrics for thousands of years – a piece of cotton fabric dating from around 5000 BC was indeed found in Mexico. Cotton can even be grown in different colours than white such as brown and rust.
Different uses of cotton
Cotton is a key ingredient in the making of many different types of textiles. In addition to being used to make cheap curtains it is also used to make denim (blue jeans), corduroy, absorbent materials used in towels and bathrobes (called terrycloth) and the regular underwear, shirts and socks. These are all types of fabrics that we use daily, and most of us are familiar with the fact that cotton is used to make these. There are, however, other uses that might come as a surprise to many, such as fishing nets, gunpowder and coffee filters. It is also used in the cosmetic and medical industries in the shape of cotton pads, cotton buds and other cotton products.
Use of cotton in cheap curtains
By using cotton in cheap curtains the natural resources of the world is promoted and supported. The material is naturally soft and provides a favourable flexibility in the curtains. In addition to being used in its pure form it can also be mixed with synthetic materials such as nylon or polyester. In terms of caring for cheap curtains made of cotton it is important to follow care-labels carefully. Many cheap curtains have embellishments or ribbon décor on them which could mean they need to be dry cleaned only, so always check the label.
