The Use Of Polyester In Cheap Curtains

The synthetic polyester thread is commonly used in soft furnishings such as cheap curtains and cushions as well as bed sheets and clothing. It can be used on its own or in a blend with other fibres such as cotton. We’ll take a closer look at the history and usage of polyester in this article.

What is polyester?

Polyester is actually a group of different polymers but the term “polyester” most commonly refers to polyethylene terephthalate, often shortened to PET. Some types of polyester are biodegradable, particularly those that contain certain natural chemicals, but most of them are not.

The history of polyester

PET was patented in 1941 by British Whinfield and Dickson, and bought by DuPont in 1946. Initially it was marketed as “the fabric that didn’t need ironing” and could be used for most purposes from clothing to cheap curtains.

Characteristics and uses of polyester

Polyester can easily be washed and dries relatively quickly. The shape of a polyester garment can stay in its original shape longer than other types of fabric and for this reason it is commonly used for making outdoor clothing. Because it dries quickly and is hydrophobic it is excellent for this use. Polyester is also very durable, so if you buy for example cheap curtains made of polyester they will not be worn out as easily and can retain their colour for longer. The fibre is also resistant to the majority of chemicals and is extremely unlikely to shrink or get wrinkled in the wash.

In the seventies it was very popular to make suits and other clothing out of polyester. For fabric production today it is usually used blended with other fibres such as cotton to create a more durable product but still maintain many of the advantageous characteristics of natural fabrics. Cheap curtains are products that can benefit from this as natural fibres keeps the fabric soft and flexible while the synthetic fibres can help maintain durability, particularly during cleaning.
